For all the promises that the city had to hold, the promises of quick fortune, instant love, comraderie, convenience, new technologies, Madeline noticed how dusty the city was. The glamour that she had once seen was gone.
She shuffled her feet along as she walked down the alleyway to her small apartment. He had been difficult to find but Madeline was determined. She had to see Rochester. She had to bring him home.
